Why Is Chronic Pain Increasing In India?

What is Chronic Pain and why is it increasing in our country?

Chronic pain, a persistent and debilitating condition affecting millions worldwide, is increasingly becoming a significant public health concern in India. While the country has made tremendous progress in various areas of healthcare, the alarming rise in chronic pain cases requires immediate attention and comprehensive understanding of the contributing factors.

  • Sedentary Lifestyle: The advent of modernization and technological advancements has led to a sedentary lifestyle for many Indians. Prolonged periods of sitting and lack of physical activity have contributed to musculoskeletal problems and conditions like back pain, neck pain, and joint pain. The recent trend of “Work From Home” jobs is a major contributor to this.
  • Work-related Stress: The growing competitive job market in India has resulted in increased work hours and mounting job pressures. This has led to a rise in stress-related chronic pain conditions, such as tension headaches and fibromyalgia.
  • Obesity Epidemic: India is witnessing an alarming rise in incidence of obesity, primarily due to changes in dietary habits and reduced physical activity. Obesity is a significant risk factor for chronic pain conditions like osteoarthritis, as excess weight puts strain on joints.
  • Aging Population: With a demographic shift towards an aging population, India is facing an increase in age-related chronic pain conditions. Conditions like arthritis and degenerative disc disease become more prevalent as people grow older.
  • Lack of Awareness and Access to Healthcare: Many individuals suffering from chronic pain in India may not be aware of the available treatment options. Additionally, access to specialized healthcare services can be challenging in certain regions, leaving patients without appropriate care and management.
  • Impact of Mental Health: Chronic pain and mental health are closely interconnected. The stress and emotional toll of dealing with chronic pain can lead to or exacerbate mental health issues like anxiety and depression, which can further intensify the pain experience.
  • Inadequate Pain Management Education: Healthcare professionals may not receive comprehensive training in pain management, leading to suboptimal treatment for chronic pain conditions. This results in under diagnosed and undertreated cases of chronic pain. This is further aggravated by people trying to get a quick solution rather than opting for a long lasting treatment.
  • Post-surgical Complications: The rising number of surgeries in India has also contributed to an increase in cases of post-surgical chronic pain. Poorly managed pain after surgery can lead to long-term complications.
  • Environmental Factors: Pollution and exposure to environmental toxins can trigger or worsen certain chronic pain conditions, including respiratory problems and headaches.
  • Cultural Perception of Pain: In certain cultural settings, individuals may be conditioned to endure pain without seeking medical attention, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

How can this scenario be improved?

Addressing the increasing prevalence of chronic pain in India requires a multi-faceted approach. First and foremost, creating public awareness about chronic pain and its management is crucial. Promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles can help mitigate the impact of sedentary habits and obesity.

Healthcare professionals have an important role to play in treatment of chronic pain. General practitioners need to ask specific points in history and perform examination to try and find out a cause. Radiological investigations, wherever required, should be utilised to confirm the diagnosis. And, importantly, the patients should be referred to specialists at an early stage of their ailment to start treatment early. To achieve all this, healthcare professionals must be imparted training in pain management to provide effective treatment.

It is essential to focus on mental health support for chronic pain patients, recognizing the symbiotic relationship between emotional well-being and pain management. Additionally, measures to improve access to healthcare services, especially in rural and underserved areas, will be instrumental in ensuring timely diagnosis and intervention.

In conclusion, the surge in chronic pain cases in India is a complex issue with multiple contributing factors. By addressing the root causes and implementing effective strategies, India can alleviate the burden of chronic pain on its population and enhance overall quality of life.
